All the Deets on Trending and Classic Living Room Styles

April 30, 2021 by Staff Reporter

Your living room is many things. It’s where you build friendships, connect with family, and watch (or binge) Netflix. Beyond function, your living room is the perfect canvas to express your unique style and personality.

Looking for some redesign inspiration? We’ll break down today’s most popular living room styles and how to get the look at home. For expert insight, five interior design professionals weigh in on their favorite color combos, materials, furniture, and decor for every style.

Mid century modern

Modern design hit its peak in the 1950s and 60s, which is why it’s commonly called “mid century modern.” In recent years, this style has made an epic comeback. According to Home Stratosphere’s study analyzing 916,645 living room designs, modern interior design is among the top five hottest design trends in America.

At its core, mid century modern is minimal and functional. Its style notes include clean lines, tapered furniture legs, neutral and earth tones, and natural materials, like jute and wood.

“In a mid century, every piece and every shape is important,” says Chris Barrett, interior designer and owner of Chris Barrett Design, featured in leading publications like Architectural Digest, Elle Decor, and House Beautiful.

The simplicity of the style allows you to mix in additional designs, like farmhouse or southwestern decor.

“Our favorite way to execute a modern design aesthetic is what we like to call ‘warm minimalism.’ That evokes the feeling of an inviting space with minimal focal points and clean lines,” says Brenda Thompson, Owner and Principal Designer of Atlanta’s HouseLift Design, rated the “Best Interior Design Firm” by Cobb Life Magazine.

Characteristics of mid century modern design

  • Materials: Mid century modern features wood finishes, metal accents in black and gold, and organic materials like cane.
  • Colors: Neutral shades are common, but you’ll also see rich earthy tones, like rust and forest green. “Modern design doesn’t automatically limit your color palette,” says Thompson, who likes to incorporate darker colors, like moody blues and greens.
  • Textures: Bring in natural textures through woven baskets, leather armchairs, and staggered plants.

Components of mid century modern design

  • Furniture: Begin with a bold base color for the sofa or sectional, such as stark white or emerald green. Then select coffee tables and media consoles featuring walnut wood and hairpin legs.
  • Decor: It’s easy to spot mid century decor at stores like West Elm and Target, but be careful not to over theme. “We would suggest using very minimal styling,” says Thompson. “We never want to over-style.”
  • Lighting: Select table and floor lamps with unique curves and lines. For a bold accent, hang a geometric chandelier in the center of the living room.

Scandanavian and Hygge

Simple and sophisticated with a dash of cozy, “Scandinavian style” has been catching eyes the past five years.

“Scandinavian design has a very minimalist look and feel, so oftentimes, less is more,” says Georgina Borneman-Street, CEO & Principal Designer at Cobalt Blue 1802 in Los Angeles.

Inspired by Nordic countries like Finland, Denmark, and Norway, Scandinavian design has a distinct hygge vibe. “Hygge” (pronounced “hoo-guh”) is a Danish term that uses tea, pastries, blankets, and fireplaces to create feelings of “coziness” and “contentment.”

Like Scandi style, hygge design has also been trending in recent years. Hygge was even on the shortlist for Oxford Dictionary’s Word of the Year in 2016. Both styles display ample natural light, clean lines, and comfortable textures. The furniture and decor should be functional, first and foremost, emphasizing quality over clutter.

Characteristics of Scandinavian design

  • Materials: Raw, natural materials, such as light woods, leather, wicker, and clay.
  • Colors: Soft whites paired with earthy, neutral shades, like nude, cocoa, and sage. “The color palette is almost extreme minimalist, so cooler, understated tones,” says Borneman-Street.
  • Textures: Ample texture from cable knit fabrics, color variation in wood grains, and plenty of house plants, like snake plants and pothos, for a nature-inspired space.

Components of Scandinavian design

  • Furniture: A few carefully curated pieces should be plenty for your Scandinavian space. “Scandinavian design is all about functionality, so every piece has a purpose,” Borneman-Street explains. Start with a plush cream sofa, then add a coffee table in white oak and a wide-frame accent chair.
  • Decor: Maintain the minimal aesthetic. Your decor should serve some purpose, so consider decorative elements that add to your hygge feel, like faux fur blankets, pine-scented candles, and chic coffee table books.
  • Lighting: Aim for minimal lighting fixtures with warm bulbs to create a homey feel. “Scandinavian design lighting is typically understated, while still incorporating those clean lines and natural tones,” says Borneman-Street.

Coastal

While your mind may wander to seashell lamps and beach-themed throw pillows, a coastal interior is not quite so kitschy.

“Being in Southern California, I tend to do a lot of coastal-influenced homes,” says Barrett. “I would describe it as inviting, comfortable, and fresh.” Coastal design features ample natural light and organic materials, like wicker and wood. The style embraces white on white decor and furniture, along with waves of blue and green accents.

Characteristics of coastal design

  • Materials: A coastal design weaves in driftwood, bamboo, and jute, among other natural elements. It may also feature some glass accents, especially in decor and lighting.
  • Colors: Start with white as your base, then add some oceanic shades of blue and green. “Coastal tends to be lighter and brighter, so you see a lot of whites and off-whites,” says Barrett. “I tend to work with blues, blue-grays, [and] teal.”
  • Textures: Use casual textiles, like linen and cotton, for a relaxed living room style.

Components of coastal design

  • Furniture: Select a sofa with deep cotton cushions in a neutral shade like nude or navy. Choose wicker or rattan frames for armchairs and additional seating. Wood coffee tables, side tables, and media consoles should feature a light to medium stain to keep the look light. Your coastal living room should feel like a vacation home.
  • Decor: Invite the outdoors in. Consider palms and grasses in blue ceramic vases, wicker baskets for blankets, and the occasional faux coral piece.
  • Lighting: Coastal homes should feature plenty of natural light. Use table lamps with a glass or ceramic base and floor lamps featuring light wood to enhance the warmth.

Modern farmhouse

If you love industrial lighting, shiplap walls, and apron sinks, a modern farmhouse interior is for you!

What began as an offshoot of shabby-chic design in the 1990s has now evolved into a style sensation. The farmhouse trend hit its stride after renovation duo Chip and Joanna Gaines launched their HGTV hit show, Fixer Upper. Google’s Top Charts listed farmhouse style as the number-one trending home style of 2019.

Today, designers aiming for a farmhouse look often add contemporary touches like brass sconces and leather armchairs for a modern farmhouse vibe.

“Modern farmhouse is a thing right now,” comments Kaari Sommer, an interior stylist who manages a home decor blog, The Sommer Home.

Characteristics of modern farmhouse design

  • Materials: Farmhouse design incorporates natural materials with a rustic finish, like reclaimed woods and caramel-colored leather and warm metals such as brass and iron.
  • Colors: The style primarily uses white, black, and light woods. Sommer recommends changing up accent colors with the seasons: “Let’s say you bring in blush for spring, rust for fall, blue for summer. That’s what’s fun about farmhouse is you have the white, black, and wood, and you can bring in any color to go with that.”
  • Textures: Soften sleek, clean lines in your architecture and decor with textures from wood grains and wicker and textiles like cotton and canvas.

Components of modern farmhouse design

  • Furniture: Keep your furnishings simple. Choose neutral, muted colors for your cotton couch. Select a mid century modern armchair in leather and wood and complete the space with a simple side table with straight iron legs.
  • Decor: Modern details like glossy pottery and abstract art blend well with farmhouse furnishings. Soften the room with sage-colored window dressings and table runners.
  • Lighting: Mix and match modern and vintage lighting fixtures. Try an industrial chandelier with a matte black finish and visible Edison bulbs. If you want to lean more rustic, pick a piece featuring reclaimed wood.

Industrial

Industrial design is raw and rugged, yet warm and inviting, and based on Google Trends, this style is among the top five interior design trends in the country.

“Industrial spaces are so fun because they tend to be really raw and open,” says Borneman-Street. “Think warehouse style.”

Industrial design draws its inspiration from vintage factories and salvaged materials. You’ll find exposed brick, raw wood beams, pipes, and ducting, creating a rough, unfinished aesthetic.

Characteristics of industrial design

  • Materials: Industrial design is all about finding beauty in raw and rustic materials such as weathered wood, iron, concrete, and brick.
  • Colors: This style balances darker tones, such as charcoal and espresso, with neutral shades, like beige and gray.
  • Textures: In an industrial space, you’ll find abundant textures from exposed brick, pipes, and wood.

Components of industrial design

  • Furniture: Incorporate vintage furniture with dark colors and textured materials. Tables and shelves may combine metal and wood, while your sofas and armchairs feature leather and velvet.
  • Decor: Fashion raw, weathered materials into unique, decorative elements. “This is a great place to bring in upcycled materials, and every piece usually has a story to tell,” says Borneman-Street.
  • Lighting: Lighting is crucial in industrial design and should cast a warm, wide glow to cover the open layout. Edison bulbs are especially prevalent, often paired with wire cages or bell-shaped pendants overhead and dark iron bases for table and floor lamps. “The lighting in industrial spaces tends to be very functional and adds a little heart and soul to the building itself,” says Borneman-Street.

Contemporary

While laypeople often confuse contemporary and modern styles, they are far from synonymous.

In the 1970s, a few decades after Modernism shaped art and design, contemporary style emerged, sharing traits like clean lines and minimal decor with its predecessor. “Modern and contemporary styles imply that there is, compositionally, a real play between positive and negative space,” says Jessica Shaw, Interior Design Director with the Turett Collaborative. “These styles are much more minimal and edited than rustic or boho.”

Despite their similarities, contemporary design has shifted over time, following the trends of the day. “Modern is a time, where contemporary is about right now and the future,” Barrett explains.

According to Home Stratosphere’s study, contemporary is the most popular living room style in the country. Today’s contemporary style encompasses cool tones from materials like concrete and quartz, coupled with unique shapes and curves. It’s a popular look among leading retailers like Crate & Barrel and Restoration Hardware.

Characteristics of contemporary design

  • Materials: Contemporary style features smooth, glossy materials, such as stainless steel, glass, and painted woods.
  • Colors: A monochromatic color palette, relying heavily on blacks, whites, and grays, is a style staple.
  • Textures: Textures like reclaimed woods and knit throws are less common; instead, play with unexpected shapes and lines. Contemporary upholstery generally has a tight, clean look, with materials like sleek, white leather or soft, gray chenille. A shaggy area rug can help soften the room.

Components of contemporary design

  • Furniture: Be daring with your furniture selection, opting for unique curves and sleek surfaces.
  • Decor: Contemporary design is clean and uncluttered, so Shaw encourages a precise and thoughtful approach to decor. “Contemporary spaces allow for more breathing room.” A few well-placed vases and art pieces can complete the look.

Bohemian

Minimal designs certainly have their appeal, but today Americans are craving something bold and eclectic.

Bohemian style has entered the design space with a bang, claiming the number two spot in Joybird’s study of interior design trends. In addition, the bohemian aesthetic recently gained national attention when HGTV’s Design Star: Next Gen named bohemian interior designer Cameron Hamilton its winner.

Inspired by countries like Persia and Morocco, this style combines rich ruby reds and mustard yellows with natural materials like jute and macrame. Colors, prints, and patterns pile on top of another for a playful aesthetic that invites guests to let loose and chill.

Characteristics of bohemian design

  • Materials: Boho design includes mostly organic materials, such as light woods, wicker, and an abundance of plants.
  • Colors: Color is key: the richer, the better. Pull vibrant shades like tangerine, violet, and emerald.
  • Textures: Textures are prevalent through macrame wall hangings, woven baskets, velvet armchairs, and more.

Components of bohemian design

  • Furniture: Bohemian furniture is bright and inviting. Textures like velvet and leather, and low-level seating, such as poufs and bean bags, create a relaxed aesthetic.
  • Decor: Decor is eclectic, colorful, and carefree. Layer Persian rugs and Turkish Kilim pillows. Adorn floating shelves with plants, candles, and abstract art. Let your creative expression run wild.

Traditional

If you’re drawn to European designs or elaborate “old money” homes, a traditional interior may be the ideal approach for your living room style.

“Traditional is a more stately look,” says Sommer, who describes her own home’s style as a traditional base with “a sprinkling in of modern and farmhouse.” Modern influences like sleek brass sconces and white cotton textiles pair perfectly with vintage architecture and accents, such as crown molding, built-in bookshelves, and antique floral artwork.

While traditional style uses colors and forms that hint at Old World trends, this classic style has certainly stood the test of time. Traditional living rooms combining warm woods with intricate designs. Textiles are often bright and patterned, and accessories are elegant and abundant.

Characteristics of traditional design

  • Materials: Traditional design relies heavily on textiles and woods, typically in a darker stain. You may also use some intricate glass and metal accents.
  • Colors: Dark and cherry wood stains are popular for traditional design. Navy, burgundy, and forest green are safe bets for your color scheme.
  • Textures: Apply a variety of textures in the fabrics and furnishings, including ornate details in architectural features like crown molding and columns.

Components of traditional design

  • Furniture: Your furniture choice should remind guests of an 18th or 19th century home. Choose elaborate woodwork for the frame with rich colors in your fabric. Sommer suggests a couch paired with two wingback armchairs in a textured material.
  • Decor: Choose decor with ornate details and a vintage vibe, such as candlesticks and floral paintings. Sommer recommends mixing in a few modern pieces to keep the look fresh.
  • Lighting: To maintain the warm aesthetic, incorporate several table and floor lamps with curved lampshades and intricate bases.

Other notable interior design styles

Here’s a preview of some other popular interior design that didn’t make our list above:

Art Deco

Opulent, elegant, and grand, art deco features rich colors, bold shapes, and elaborate details.

Transitional

A transitional design blends traditional and modern styles for a feeling of class and leisure.

Desert Modern

This style pulls from modern and bohemian influences and pairs them with colors and textures of desert landscapes.

Mountain Contemporary

This style balances rustic and modern styles for a luxury mountain lodge look.

French country

Industrial Interior Design Is Trendy

March 31, 2021 by Staff Reporter

While contemporary industrial interior design is essentially a 20th century movement, its roots can be traced back to factory buildings of the 18th and 19th centuries. The style draws inspiration from unfinished, utilitarian factory spaces, highlighting the beauty of raw wood, concrete, brick, and exposed pipes. With mainstream popularity, industrial interior design furniture and accessories are available at retailers like Restoration Hardware, IKEA, and Anthropologie.

“With the growth of online shopping and design, it’s easier for the everyday consumer to not be intimidated by the style that we once only saw in Tribeca and Soho,” notes Maria J. DePasquale, a top real estate agent in Princeton, NJ, who works with 65% more single-family homes than her peers.

Today, you don’t need to live in a converted warehouse to embrace the industrial aesthetic. We’ve rounded up 11 tips to help you nail the look with help from DePasquale and Philadelphia-based designer and salvage expert, Chris Stock.

1. Design with a neutral color palette

Industrial interior design embraces a largely neutral color palette. The warmth of raw wood and copper balance cool grays and stark whites. When designing your space, focus on balancing warm and cool colors. If you lean too cool, your space may feel cold and uninviting. Lean too warm, and the style may stray into farmhouse interior design territory.

Start by painting your walls white or a light to medium shade of gray like Gravity by Valspar or Stonington Gray by Benjamin Moore. These shades perfectly complement an exposed brick wall or fireplace. And if your home isn’t blessed with these features, don’t stress — you can instantly add warmth with a shiplap accent wall.

2. Combine old and new decor

The mixture of new materials with vintage elements is one of the cornerstones of industrial interior design. Incorporate old books, photographs, lamps, and furniture for a rustic touch. You can also add character to newer furniture by swapping in vintage door handles, drawer pulls, and other hardware.

Chris Stock, contractor and owner of Philadelphia Salvage, advises homeowners to keep an eye out for small businesses like his that strive to create one-of-a-kind pieces. Stock transforms old materials into industrial-style tables, shelves, and decor for his clients.

3. Incorporate concrete

Industrial interior design spaces incorporate concrete elements that harken back to the walls and floors of factory spaces. Since concrete is durable and develops a warm patina over time, it’s also an excellent material for kitchen countertops and islands. If you’re not ready to commit to that level of permanence, incorporate concrete with a small accent piece like this side table. You can also experiment with paint that mimics the look of concrete on an accent wall or fireplace surround.

4. Show off pipes and ductwork

Exposed pipes, ductwork, and beams are all staples of industrial design. Designers are opting to show off the bones of older buildings and converted spaces instead of covering them up. If you don’t have these features in your home, use furniture to reflect those structural elements.

Pieces like this industrial wood and pipe shelving unit project the rugged, utilitarian style that is the hallmark of industrial interior design. In the bathroom, you can show off some pipes with this marble and chrome double vanity, or this antique brass rainfall showerhead — both of which reflect the function and beauty of industrial design.

5. Warm up the room with leather seating

The leather couch was first widely available to the general public in the 19th century when industrialization made it easier and faster to produce furniture. Since that time, the leather couch has remained a staple in many design styles, including industrial.

Leather armchairs, couches, and sectionals are both comfortable and durable. If you have kids and pets at home, opt for distressed leather that hides imperfections like scratches.

Leather furniture is a smart investment that can last you up to 25 years or more. But if you prefer to go sans animal hide, this vegan sectional sofa from Albany Park is a gorgeous option. It’s easy to assemble and comes with a lifetime warranty.

6. Get the loft-look with exposed brick

While exposed brick walls are having a moment right now, brick has always been a coveted feature in industrial interior design. Bricks are just as practical today as they were in the warehouses and factories of centuries past.

Brick is one of the more eco-friendly building materials available. Since brick is made of natural base materials, it does not react with other substances or release harmful chemicals into the environment. Because it retains heat to keep spaces warm during the colder months and cooler in hotter temps, brick is energy-efficient as well.

Attach faux brick panels to walls or use a brick stencil and paint to mimic the look of gritty, aged exposed brick in newer spaces. Removable wallpaper is a temporary option for dorm rooms and rental spaces. You can also line bureaus, bookshelves, and vanities with brick peel-and-stick wallpaper to add texture and charm to off-the-shelf furniture.

7. Turn lighting fixtures into focal points with retro light bulbs

No industrial interior is complete without Edison light bulbs. Exposed filaments, squiggly illuminated ribbons, and that warm glow are the signature qualities of the Edison light bulb. Edison light bulbs do not typically use shades and covers because their beauty is in their form.

Today’s Edison bulbs mimic the original design but are more energy-efficient and have a longer lifespan, lasting up to 15,000 life hours. Make a statement with an industrial chandelier, or add a twinkle to outdoor spaces with strewn solar LED Edison string lights.

8. Search for one-of-a-kind reclaimed wood and metal pieces

Wood adds an organic feel to stark industrial spaces. Reclaimed wood in particular offers charm and beauty to any room. Search online for shops and dealers offering reclaimed lumber, wood, or timber or reclaimed wood furniture near you.

“One of the easiest ways is to use reclaimed wood in shelving,” notes Stock. “Floating shelves are very popular right now. We offer both the reclaimed wood raw or finished and can weld custom floating shelf brackets and offer new and reclaimed shelf brackets.”

“‘Adapt and reuse’ is finally catching on. People don’t want to throw it away, but they don’t know what to do with it — that’s where we come in and divert it from the landfill. We save the builder and homeowner dump fees, and it’s just good for the environment.”

If you don’t have time to search for reclaimed furniture, look for new pieces that pair distressed wood with metal. West Elm’s open walnut coffee table captures the essence of the industrial aesthetic.

9. Splurge on factory windows

Original factory windows made of steel and aluminum were large to provide light for those working inside. The signature grid pattern of factory windows comes from the metal dividers, or muntins, that connect individual panes of glass to form larger windows.

According to Stock, metal factory windows are trending right now. Black metal framed multi-pane windows pair well with exposed brick and concrete for a chic, urban look. Buyers can find original steel windows in salvage shops and online. Today, manufacturers recreate the look of factory windows with scratch-resistant vinyl and energy-efficient glass.

And factory windows are not just for a home’s exterior. Stock has noticed more residential and commercial designers using black-framed windows as dividers inside of the home: “Factory window walls are great ways to separate spaces but still allow light through.”

10. Embrace a sustainable design ethic

Industrial interior design incorporates the use of repurposed furnishings and sustainable building materials like wood and concrete. That is good news for the owner or renter who values eco-friendly design.

Stock has always had a passion for salvaged treasures, so he’s happy to see a growing movement of people looking for quality over quantity. “After all, we are spending more time home than ever and that’s led to a newfound desire to make our living spaces reflect our lifestyle and our values,” he comments.

He adds his clients are also taking more care to learn about retailers’ supply chains and business practices. “Fair labor, safe work environment, and supporting local people is more important now than ever with the pandemic.” Giving new life to reclaimed building materials, fixtures, and furniture reduces waste and adds a sense of charm and history to modern interiors.

11. Soften spaces with rugs, throws, and upholstered benches

With concrete surfaces and exposed pipes, the industrial aesthetic can feel sterile if you don’t balance your design with softer elements. Style the room with plush area rugs, cozy throws, and throw pillows in ivories, grays, and chocolate browns. Upholstered ottomans, cushioned benches, and handmade poufs also offset the clean lines and hard surfaces of industrial spaces (they add extra seating, too!).

Grandmillennial Design: What It Is And Why You Should Care

March 31, 2021 by Staff Reporter

Part traditional, part cottagecore, and part modern maximalism, grandmillennial style is reviving all of the elements we formerly considered stuffy and old-fashioned. Think wicker furniture, vintage candy dishes, and 1980s Laura Ashley florals. Chintz and Chinoiserie. Ruffles and skirted tablecloths. Gilded mirrors and antique brass sculptures.Oh yeah, gran-glamour is back, only this time with a modern twist. “You can have an abstract painting, frameless, above a very traditional velvet piece of furniture,” suggests Tatiana Machado-Rosas, an award-winning senior designer at Jackson Design and Remodeling. She emphasizes that it’s the blending of new and old that makes this aesthetic fresh.

Afraid your grandmillennial interior will look more like Dolores Umbridge’s office than a hipster haven? We got you. We spoke with Machado-Rosas and top Houston real estate agent and grandmillennial-fan Cindy Boutwell for tips to pull off this emerging design trend. Here’s how to achieve the perfect balance of gran and millennial elements.

1. Scour estate sales for antique signature pieces and accessories

While you’re at it, hit local thrift stores and antique sales. You’ll need to dig to find authentic pieces if your gran isn’t keen on parting with her French velour settee. Not to mention, you’ll feel amazing knowing you’ve decorated sustainably by buying secondhand.

Look for dark wood period furniture, including a Chippendale secretary desk and vintage accessories like bronze candle sconces. You can also find vintage-inspired pieces online thanks to the return of mid century modern design. Boutwell suggests incorporating a bamboo bar cart for a douse of retro flair.

2. Show off your sass with quips by needlepoint

In lieu of delicate floral embroidery, opt for sarcastic remarks in needlepoint. Etsy sellers peddle cheeky sayings cleverly disguised as benign embroidered throw pillows and wall art. Stitched sassiness comes in rebellious commands like“come back with a warrant,” and rap lyrics accented by images of roses and brass knuckles.

3. Mix and match patterns — just don’t go crazy

Grandmillennial style embraces floral and other whimsical patterns. But a word to the wise: Machado-Rosas warns that combining multiple patterns leans toward visual heaviness. To prevent visual overload, select patterns with a similar design and color. Repeated elements bring cohesion and serenity to your space.

4. Roll out the floral wallpaper

With its return to popularity, wallpaper’s wide range of styles and colors provide endless opportunities to personalize your grandmillennial space. A wistful botanical pink wallpaper or scenic green toile wallpaper could serve as the perfect backdrop for your dreamy decor. Or lean into your dark side with a traditional palette with a bold Victorian floral design.

Opt for removable wallpaper in case you grow out of the look or decide to sell your home in a few years. Boutwell notes that while wallpaper is back, it isn’t a mainstream style for homebuyers. And she’d know — her sales team closes more than $22 million in transactions each year in Houston. For a more subtle look, try adding wallpaper to the back of a bookshelf instead of wrapping an entire room in hydrangea and rose wallpaper.

5. Liven up a room with greenery inspired by traditional French gardens

No grandmillennial motif is complete without greenery from your garden (or Michaels). Finish a corner with a French-inspired boxwood topiary. Place a preserved plant on your tchotchke shelf or atop a stack of coffee table books. And for those special occasions, fill a fluted vase with blooming hydrangeas and peonies.

6. Showcase grandmother’s crystal and fine china

Pull those storage boxes down from the attic and dust off bygone-era collectibles and quirky thrift shop finds. Grandmillennialism demands these treasures receive VIP treatment with a front-and-center display. While a china cabinet is ideal to house inherited treasures and your burgeoning Lladró collection, wall shelving and wire racks also do the trick. To avoid a cluttered look, group similar items together.

7. Customize your color palette

With a style as eclectic as grandmillennial, any color palette goes: soft pastels, rich jeweled tones, and even vibrant hues are fair game. “I don’t think that there is a particular color mix,” comments Machado-Rosas when discussing granny chic color trends. “[It’s] just a matter of what you like.”

Boutwell has employed a wide range of color schemes for her clients’ grandmillennial designs. In one home, she paired emerald green upholstery with pink accent pillows. In another memorable design, she brought in blues and whites (mimicking traditional porcelain) to offset a dark brown couch.

If you’re still attached to neutral gray-and-white palettes, you can take a more monochromatic approach to the trend. “Everybody has a different level of how they can take color,” adds Machado-Rosas. “Some people would rather stay softer … some are a little bit bolder and can take the vibrant colors.”

8. Don’t overwhelm the room

“Be careful about oversaturating the style,” warns Machado-Rosas. While mixing multiple patterns is a hallmark of the granny-chic look, overuse could date your interior sooner than you’d like. You don’t need to add decor to every shelf and surface — blank space balances a detailed design. It’s also essential to mix in modern elements to maintain a youthful look.

9. Be mindful of clutter

You don’t have to Marie Kondo your entire house because, let’s be honest, all of your granny-chic tchotchkes bring you joy. Just remember that even an intentionally busy aesthetic can stray into hoarder territory if overdone. Scale back on groupings of tiny accents, such as figurines, in favor of a few larger decorative objects, such as vases or sculptures. If a stack of books on your side table could topple with the slightest nudge, pare it down to your three favorites. Or clear items from some flat surfaces, and leave sections of a coffee table or countertop bare.

Let your individuality shine with grandmillennialism

Like side bangs and baggy jeans, style trends come and go. Machado-Rosas recommends leaning into grandmillennial style with accents such as artwork and mirrors rather than overhauling your furniture sets. This way, you can easily (and affordably) swap out accessories as trends evolve. “I don’t think [the grandmillennial trend] is a timeless look,” she admits.

Boutwell, on the other hand, believes that the grandmillennial style may stick around for quite some time. “If done well, it’s very warm and inviting,” she says, noting that people are beginning to tire of gray and white palettes and are leaning toward more color.

Longevity aside, grandmillennial design is an exciting emerging style with its nostalgic aesthetic and celebration of personal expression. “Make it your own,” encourages Boutwell. “Go with what makes you comfortable and what you like.”

11 Cheap Bathroom Remodel Ideas That You’ll Find Relaxing

March 31, 2021 by Staff Reporter

Crisp subway tiles, fluffy towels, an LED back-lit mirror — you dream of upgrading your bathroom every time you brush your teeth. And with our cheap bathroom remodel ideas, you can completely transform your grooming space without shelling out the median bathroom renovation cost of $32,000.We’ve curated a list of the 11 best bathroom remodeling tips that cost under $200. For added insight to these upgrades’ resale value, we spoke with Victoria Wilkinson, the Listings Director for a top-selling brokerage in Saratoga Springs, NY, who just recently completed her own bathroom renovation.

1. Frame your dated built-in mirror

Counter-to-ceiling built-in mirrors instantly date your bathroom. For a quick fix, add a wooden frame around the mirror. This DIY project requires few tools and only takes four hours to complete. Paint the frame white to brighten the room, or opt for a dark gray shade for a more contemporary twist.

Estimated cost: $25-$50

2. Paint the walls a cheerful color

Non-neutral wall colors can be hit or miss. However, bathrooms are the perfect space to experiment with your wild side since they’re small and relatively easy to repaint. Purchase paint samples to test a few colors before you commit to a gallon — paint’s appearance varies depending on the natural and artificial lighting in a room.

We love these designer-approved colors for powder rooms and primary bathrooms:

3. Introduce metallics with new fixtures and decor

Gold and brass metallics bring warmth and elegance to the bathroom. If you don’t have the budget to swap out faucets and showerheads, you can add metallic flare with a gold wastebasket, soap dispenser, and toothbrush holder instead.

Wilkinson shares that she’s a fan of mixing metals. While this may seem like an avant-garde idea (and maybe even a little scary), it’s totally doable. Choose one dominant metal for your primary fixtures, such as the faucet and showerhead. Then use a second finish for your drawer pulls and decor items. Safe metal combinations include brushed brass with stainless steel and matte black with chrome.

Estimated cost: $50-$75

4. Add crown molding for a custom finish

Not only does crown molding elevate your bathroom’s design, but it also draws the eye to the ceiling, making the room look bigger. Choose a material that’s moisture-resistant, so it stands up to shower and bath steam.

Estimated cost: $4-$15 per linear foot, including materials and labor

5. Increase storage and style with over-the-toilet shelving

Every bathroom could benefit from added storage, especially smaller bathrooms with limited cabinet space. For a cheap bathroom remodel, add a pre-fab shelving unit or floating shelves above the toilet. Stage the shelves with neatly rolled towels, vintage signs, and potted succulents to complete the look.

6. Brighten the cabinets with a light paint shade

You won’t often find a lux hotel bathroom with dark cabinets, and there’s a reason for that. Dark colors recede and tend to make bathrooms look smaller than they truly are. If your cabinets are a dark shade (or golden oak), paint them white or light gray to add visual space to the room.

One of these tried-and-true paint shades flatter most bathroom styles:

Estimated cost: $25-$100

7. Add a stunning peel-and-stick tile backsplash

Available at most big box home stores and easy to install, peel-and-stick backsplashes are a must for a cheap bathroom remodel. A tile backsplash also helps protect the wall behind your sink from moisture, water damage, and mold. For a classic finish, you can’t go wrong with white subway tiles. Otherwise, play with metallic or light blue tiles to add interest to the space.

Estimated cost: $30-$50

8. Install LEDs under the cabinet for moody lighting

Adjustable LED toe-kick lighting adds interest and dimension to your bathroom. You can purchase LED strip lights from Amazon and hardware stores like Home Depot and Lowes. Most To place LED strip lights, all you need to do is peel off the sticker on the back and press the adhesive side to the bottom of the cabinet.

Estimated cost: $20-$50

9. Style the room with spa-inspired accessories

Your first step to a relaxing bathroom is decluttering: A messy bathroom can bring down even the best remodels. Once you’ve cleared up counter and shelf space, curate spa-like accessories such as fluffy towels, scented soy candles, and bamboo bathtub caddies. For next-level tranquility, add a small zen fountain. Nothing helps you settle into a hot bath like the sound of trickling water over pebbles.

Estimated cost: $20-$200

10. Recaulk the bathtub and freshen up the tile

If you don’t have the budget to replace bathroom features, refresh them. Rustoleum’s Tub & Tile Paint can give your tub the look and feel of porcelain for less than $25 (far less than the cost of ripping out tile and replacing the tub). You can also remove and replace moldy caulk for less than $10.

Follow these steps to recaulk bathtubs and showers like a pro:

  • Clean and dry the area in and around your tub and be sure to remove any loose strips of caulk.
  • Apply two strips of painter’s tape to create your guide for the new strip of caulk.
  • Using a caulk gun, lay down your new bead of caulk at an even pace.
  • Wipe away any excess caulk with a wet sponge or finger.
  • Allow the caulk to dry and cure for at least 24 hours.

 Estimated cost: $5-$25

11. Create a focal point with oversized artwork

Artwork is not often on the list of considerations when it comes to a bathroom remodel, but an oversized piece of art can make a huge impact. If you add art to your bathroom, remember that steam and humidity are pervasive, so choose a fairly inexpensive piece and protect it with a glass frame. Remember to ventilate the space with a fan and open windows each time you shower.

Estimated cost: $100-$200

Transform your bathroom one upgrade at a time

Bathroom renovations don’t have to cost a small fortune. With a bit of planning and elbow grease, you can completely transform your bathroom for a fraction of the cost of a professional remodel.
