Ace Hardware to open distribution center in Kansas City, creating 350 new jobs

June 24, 2023 by Staff Reporter

Ace Hardware Corporation, the world’s largest retailer-owned hardware cooperative, announced it will open a new Retail Support Center (RSC) in Kansas City, creating 350 jobs. The 1.5 million-square-foot facility, projected to be fully operational in 2025, will increase the company’s inventory capacity and levels of service.

“We’re excited to add a world-renowned company like Ace Hardware to the growing list of businesses opening new facilities in Missouri,” said Governor Mike Parson. “Our state’s location in the center of the United States gives companies the ability to reach customers quickly. We’re proud to welcome Ace Hardware to Kansas City and look forward to watching its success in the region.”

Ace Hardware’s new Kansas City facility will balance its current distribution network and meet the needs of its growing retail landscape. In the last 10 years, the company has increased its retail sales by $12 billion. Ace Hardware has also experienced 11 consecutive years of new domestic store growth and opened 850 new stores in the past five years. Its network of distribution centers allows the company to offer best-in-category service and support to its retailers.

“We look forward to construction of the new Retail Support Center in Kansas City, which will be a critical part of Ace Hardware’s robust supply chain,” said Lori Bossmann, Executive Vice President, Chief Supply Chain Officer for Ace Hardware Corporation. “This new facility will allow Ace to accommodate its recent growth and sales volume, and it will prepare our company for future business opportunities. By strengthening our presence in the Midwest, Ace will be better positioned to fulfill deliveries more frequently, ensuring consistent service levels as new stores are opening within our network.”

Ace’s new facility in Missouri will be almost twice the size of its average RSC. It will be the first facility in the new KCI 29 Logistics Park, a 3,300-acre megasite assembled by Hunt Midwest. The company’s Kansas City RSC will also be equipped with state-of-the art technology, automation, and warehouse management systems. Construction is expected to begin in the second quarter of 2023.

“Ace Hardware’s new facility is an exciting addition to Kansas City’s growing economy,” said Michelle Hataway, Acting Director of the Department of Economic Development. “This project is another example of our state’s ability to attract investments that make a difference for Missourians. We’re grateful to our partners who helped support Ace Hardware as it creates jobs and new opportunities in Kansas City.”

For this expansion, Ace Hardware will benefit from the Missouri Works program, a tool that helps companies expand and retain workers by providing access to capital through withholdings or tax credits for job creation. The company is also receiving assistance from Missouri One Start, a division of the Department of Economic Development. Missouri One Start assists eligible businesses with their recruitment and training needs.

What others are saying

“We’re thrilled that Ace Hardware chose KCI 29 Logistics Park to support its growing retail operations with a new 1.5 million-square-foot distribution center,” said Mike Bell, Senior Vice President for Commercial Real Estate at Hunt Midwest. “Their selection of KCI 29 is a testament to our superior location, labor, and logistics story and validates the importance of a megasite to attract large-scale users.”

“As a top 15 U.S. industrial market, Kansas City continues to see rapid growth in the industrial space and attract internationally recognized brands, including Ace Hardware,” said Elli Bowen, Vice President of KC SmartPort. “With access to robust utility and transportation infrastructure as well as a skilled labor pool, Hunt Midwest’s KCI 29 megasite positions Kansas City as a prime location for companies looking to optimize their manufacturing, distribution and e-commerce operations.”

“Ace Hardware’s new distribution center in Missouri is significant for a multitude of reasons,” said Subash Alias, CEO of Missouri Partnership. “Notably, Ace Hardware will be the first company at KCI 29 Logistics Park. This facility’s expansive footprint surpasses the norm and will create hundreds of new jobs in the vibrant Kansas City region while strengthening Missouri’s reputation as the best location for companies.”

Missouri Technology Corporation awards total of $14.85 million through the Advanced Manufacturing Resiliency Grant Program

April 17, 2023 by Staff Reporter

The Missouri Technology Corporation (MTC) announced today that it has awarded a total of $14.85 million to two recipients through the Advanced Manufacturing Resiliency Grant Program. Jordan Valley Innovation Center (JVIC) at Missouri State University and the API Innovation Center (APIIC) at Cortex Innovation Community will use grant awards of $5.4 million and $9.45 million to invest in the manufacturing of semiconductors and pharmaceuticals, respectively.

“We’re pleased to invest in Missouri’s technology industry and local manufacturing through the use of the Advanced Manufacturing Resiliency Grant Program,” said Governor Mike Parson. “This program allows us to support our state’s high-tech sector and its ability to make products important to national security. Our goal is always to strengthen Missouri’s economy, and these investments are helping achieve that by keeping the production of essential goods right here in our state.”

The Advanced Manufacturing Resiliency Grant Program provided grants to Missouri organizations that create infrastructure for industries that are fundamental to the national security of the United States, especially where the manufacturing of essential products have become reliant on foreign production, which potentially jeopardizes a reliable supply chain. Grants focus on manufacturing where Missouri has an inherent connection or advantage to create an environment for significant economic growth. Eligible sectors included, but were not limited to, the manufacturing of active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) and semiconductors.

When approving the proposals to be funded, MTC’s Directors believed that both of these projects not only represented the best opportunities for the grant funding to be catalytic in nature, but were also opportunities where the grant funding would be used to support foundational elements critical to developing two emerging sectors – flexible semiconductors and API. MTC believes these sectors represent areas where Missouri could become a national leader, representing an excellent opportunity for innovation and the potential for a significant positive economic development impact for the state.

“The awards to JVIC and APIIC represent an opportunity, incubated in the MTC funding process, to provide catalytic investment that accelerates promising areas in pharmaceutical and semiconductor development within the state,” said Dr. Dedric Carter, Chairman of MTC. “These areas are important to the health and quality of life of every Missourian. Our investments here help to greatly advance our contributions to local and national opportunities of significance with a stronghold in the state.”

JVIC is a unique innovation center model focused on partnering with businesses to create and advance new technologies. JVIC, with private sector partners, is a leading force in technology development focused on research and development in nanotechnology, materials, and other advanced technologies, including semiconductor packaging and flexible electronics. JVIC supports and strengthens companies in the semiconductor industry and allows Missouri companies to collaborate with other U.S. companies to bring new technologies and jobs to the state. JVIC seeks to attract new semiconductor technology companies to Missouri and promote significant economic growth.

APIIC is developing a model to address issues created by the shift in manufacturing to other countries. It seeks to catalyze the sourcing, de-risking and deployment of innovative new technologies that will enable reshoring of API and drug product manufacturing. These efforts are aimed at addressing our national crisis while benefitting Missouri’s economy and strengthening its pharmaceutical industry. APIIC leverages stakeholder partnerships and networks aligned around building a robust, scalable, and inclusive regional innovation ecosystem to protect U.S. security interests. Kansas City Peterbilt to build new facility in St. Joseph, investing $4.9 million

April 17, 2023 by Staff Reporter

Kansas City Peterbilt, Inc., a locally-owned branch of the highway, vocational, and medium-duty truck manufacturer, announced today it will build a new services and maintenance facility in St. Joseph. The company is expected to invest $4.9 million and create four new jobs.

“We’re excited to see Kansas City Peterbilt expanding its footprint in Missouri and investing in the St. Joseph community,” said Governor Mike Parson. “Missouri is showing the nation and world that it has what it takes to attract and support quality employers as they grow, strengthen communities, and improve lives. Our dedication to improved infrastructure and a stronger workforce is achieving results, and we look forward to Kansas City Peterbilt’s continued success in the Show-Me State.”

Texas-based Peterbilt has supplied the commercial vehicle market at a high standard for more than 80 years, supported through a dedicated network of independent dealerships across the country. Its new services-only facility will be the second in St. Joseph and the fifth in the state of Missouri, to include the dealership in Kansas City.

“Saint Joseph Peterbilt’s team is excited to be a part of the St. Joseph community,” said Mark Thomas, General Manager of Kansas City Peterbilt. “We are looking forward to entrenching ourselves even more in this wonderful city. Thank you to all city members, the chamber, DED, our dedicated customers, Peterbilt, and all others who made our new location a reality.”

Kansas City Peterbilt, founded in 1975, was the first and only locally-owned Peterbilt dealership within a 100 mile radius of Kansas City, Missouri. Purchased in 1986 by Leon Geis, it remains the only locally-owned Peterbilt dealership in the Kansas City region.

“We’re glad to assist Kansas City Peterbilt as it brings a new location and investment to St. Joseph,” said Maggie Kost, Acting Director of the Department of Economic Development. “To encourage economic growth, it’s important to support Missouri’s existing businesses. We appreciate the contributions of our partners who worked to help make this expansion a reality.”

“St. Joseph is excited about Peterbilt’s new facility here,” said Natalie Redmond, President and CEO of the St. Joseph Chamber of Commerce. “The capital investment is significant and we’re happy to add new jobs with the project.”

For this expansion, Kansas City Peterbilt will benefit from the Missouri Works program, a tool that helps companies expand and retain workers by providing access to capital through withholdings or tax credits for job creation.

About Kansas City Peterbilt

Constantly expanding, and under the leadership of Chris Geis, Kansas City Peterbilt, Inc. now has locations in Kansas City, Kansas, Sedalia, Missouri, and Bethany, Missouri. In 2017 the company added a new location in St. Joseph, Missouri, and in 2021 started offering mobile service. Built on a commitment of service to customers, Mr. Geis’s vision is to provide as much value as possible. That commitment to value and service has led to a virtual One Stop Shop experience at the dealership. Kansas City Peterbilt offers new and used truck sales, an over 4,500-square-foot parts display area, a bay service department, and a bay body shop. The company’s body shop includes a state-of-the-art down draft paint booth, alignment, and frame machines. Kansas City Peterbilt also has a PacLease franchise location for truck rental and leasing.
