Ameren Opens Company’s Largest Solar Energy Facility in Missouri

May 5, 2022 by Staff Reporter

Ameren Missouri is part of St. Louis-based Ameren Corporation, with a generating capacity of 10,500 megawatts. Ameren Missouri has been providing electric and gas service for more than 100 years, and their electric rates are among the lowest in the nation. Ameren Missouri’s mission is to power the quality of life for 1.2 million electric and 132,000 natural gas customers in central and eastern Missouri. Their service area covers 64 counties and more than 500 communities including the greater St. Louis area.

And Ameren’s new solar farm, the company’s largest, is now up and running in Montgomery County, Missouri.

The facility is about halfway between St. Louis and Columbia and is the largest solar project built to date by the regional electric utility. Ameren’s expansion of renewable energy is spurred both by the economics of solar and wind projects, as well as goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

“Expanding solar generation is key to our goal of reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2050,” said Mark Birk, President of Ameren Missouri.

The company said the new solar farm “was constructed following the support of more than 2,000 customers who wanted to take part in clean energy generation without having to pay high up-front costs to install solar equipment on their own roofs or property, or renters who don’t have a solar generation option.”

Ameren has a net-zero carbon emissions goal by 2050, reducing carbon emissions 50% by 2030 and 85% by 2040. Missouri’s solar market has grown faster than the national average since 2009, and our energy talent is leading the way in innovation and development at research facilities across the state.
